Hans Friedl is a landscape architect and designer based in Chicago, Illinois. His practice and research focus on the public realm where stewardship and sustainable development intersect. With a strong focus on urban and post-industrial landscapes, his work looks to repurpose and reimagine existing urban infrastructure systems into thriving and connected networks of spaces. He is a past recipient of the Hope Goddard Iselin Fellowship in Public Horticulture from the Garden Club of America.

 

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Hans Friedl received a bachelor of Arts and Science in Political Studies and International Urban Development from Boston College and the London School of Economics. He then went on to receive a Master of Landscape Architecture and Urbanism from Illinois Institute of Technology. While in school he co-authored a student led proposal that resulted in the accreditation of the IIT campus an arboretum that inspired a $2 million gift towards its establishment.

 

Currently he is an adjunct professor at Illinois Institute of Technology where he teaches courses in landscape Design Media. Friedl also continues to be involved in an annual series of practice research projects that conserves old and venerable trees across the country.
